Braving the wilderness: How one credentialing organization is taking the next step in its equity journey

In August 2022, the Association of Social Work Boards took the groundbreaking step of analyzing and publishing disaggregated data on social work licensing exam pass rates. The data included pass rates broken down by demographic group for the entire test-taking population, as well as by state/jurisdiction and school. The data publication gained the attention of social workers, major social work organizations, and the national media. ASWB worked to disseminate accurate information via multiple channels and gathered leaders from the social work community to collaborate on systems-level solutions. In collaboration with partners at HumRRO, ASWB has also undertaken multiple initiatives and research-based explorations designed to further contribute to the conversation around diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. These organizations are also working together to identify an alternate assessment model for the future of the profession based on qualitative data-driven decision making. Ultimately, our next step is moving outside of former, limited spheres and enter a larger conversation/environment to push toward social change.
