Credentialing as it exists today is a fairly recent innovation. However, the need to establish trust in professionals has existed throughout human history. This session will explore the concept of "credentialing" as it may have existed in the Medieval period. In particular, we will explore how certain professionals were "tested" (far before the development of the multiple choice question) and how their qualifications were communicated to the public.
Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate understanding of medieval professional qualifications
Describe the difference between modern credentialing methods and historical approaches
Understand that professional qualifications are rooted in a lengthy history going back over 1000 years
Better appreciate the complex intellectual world of the medieval period
